GUIDELINES FOR BOOK REVIEWING

THINGS TO NOTICE:

  • LENGTH – Adequate to present ideas – no stuffing.

  • CLARITY – Easy to understand, yet not simplistic.

  • VISUAL PRESENTATION – Print, spacing, illustrations.

  • Does it move along, and hold your INTEREST?

  • REPETITION – Does it present ideas once, or at most twice?

  • Is there any HUMOR?

  • Is it HELPFUL – Does it provide you with useful information?

  • POINT OF VIEW – Is it balanced or one-sided?

  • Is it PERSONAL? Does the author utilize the first person viewpoint?

  • Are RELEVANT EXAMPLES used to illustrate material/ideas?

  • Is the material of GENERAL or PARTICULAR interest?

  • Are there any groups or individuals who would find the material particularly USEFUL or HARMFUL?

How did you feel while you were reading it? Did you notice your attention wandering off, or did it attract and keep your interest?

Was there some satisfaction with the information you received from the book?

Was it new material? Did it expand or clarify things you already knew or present material in a fresh and more accessible way than other books on the same topic?

Don't be afraid to let your opinion show, it's valid! And be sure to identify yourself as the author either with your name, initials or a nom de plume. Reviews will be posted on the board in the library and also appear in FLUSHED, Sheena's e-zine.
