The latest in New Harbinger's self help workbook
series comes from three Toronto authors who have been colleagues
and collaborators at Toronto General Hospital's Eating
Disorders Programme. Although there are already a number
of publications dealing with bulimia, The Overcoming Bulimia
Workbook is set apart by its thorough and hopeful covering
of the field. It's also a reflection of the excellence
of the work done in a local facility.
The background to bulimia, risk factors, coping strategies,
shifting disordered thoughts and related issues of anxiety,
self harm, substance abuse and relationship difficulties
are all covered in an easy to read and non-judgmental style.
There is also an excellent chapter called "Avoiding
the Slippery Slope of Relapse" recognizing the challenges
of maintaining behavioural changes. Illustrative case histories
personalize and enliven the material, and practical exercises
accompany each chapter.
This book presents a wide range of material in a concise
and jargon-free way. The title also conveys the encouraging
notion that bulimia can be controlled and overcome by the
individual doing the work suggested in the exercises.
