4. Slim Hopes: Advertising and the Obsession With Thinness

Reviewed by Sheena's Volunteer

Recommended for: teens and adults who are interested in learning more about the influence of advertising on our weight-obsessed society.

An examination of the impact of advertising on our society's preoccupation with weight and thinness in which topics such as modeling, body modification (i.e. plastic surgery), food advertised as a drug, and the connection between food and sex are discussed.

Other issues that are touched upon include the double standard that is present within society for men and women, the elusive diet industry, and the encouragement of using food in order to meet emotional needs. This video offers an eye-opening look at the influence of advertising on how we view food and our bodies within society.
