6. The Woman's Belly Book:
Finding Your Treasure Within

By Lisa Sarasohn
Published by Self-Health Education Inc. (2003)
131 pages, $22.50

The purpose of this fun little book is to recognize your belly as a womanly gift and treasure and appreciate it, and it does just that. Through a variety of activities and exercises, women will hopefully learn to accept and value their bellies. Breathing exercises are used to help boost confidence, energy and reduce stress. Lisa Sarasohn emphasizes the strength, beauty and power in the womanly body and tries to discourage the aesthetic need to look like the women and girls in the media who are far too thin.

Throughout the book there are quotes from women who function as a cheering section and support group. These faceless voices help the reader feel empowered as they go from page to page.

This book was interesting, informative and provided fun activities to keep the reader motivated. For instance, Keeping a correspondence with your belly (p. 41) consists of you and your belly exchanging letters. By giving your belly a voice, you open communication to a part of your body that many women do not pay attention to. I enjoyed many of the activities this book provided from the belly correspondence to the breathing exercises to help me fall asleep. There is even a website (www.loveyourbelly.com) where you can order a copy of the book, find out about Sarasohn's workshops and join a discussion with other women, among many other things. It is a wonderful book specifically designed for women young and old to learn to be proud of their bodies and to love themselves.
