Dearest friend,
You are angry.
You are standing at the beginning
Of a difficult journey.
You can't understand
What is so wrong.
You believe that everything
Is perfectly fine.
You can't comprehend
Why you're faced with this road —
This road of little light.
You really are scared
And you feel all alone —
Like it's you against twenty armed men.
Take this road one step at a time
Knowing it could take months —
Even years — to complete.
But that it is worth it,
In the end.
I want you to walk down,
This long, dark, scary road
Realizing that you have
The support of dear friends —
Loving and caring hands
Guiding you.
However,
The best advice to give,
To help you move forward,
Comes from a wonderfully wise woman —
Our Eleventh Grade English teacher.
"You are your own best friend.
Treat her with care and compassion,
Giving her all that she deserves from this world."
Walk down
This long, dark, scary road
Not for me —
Or for anyone else —
But for you.
You see,
This journey can't be meaningful or helpful
If you walk down it
For someone — other than you.
Please,
Realize that you have
An eating disorder —
Anorexia.
Understand that I, too,
Walked down
This long, dark, scary road.
But,
I didn't walk down it alone.
Now,
As you are faced
With a difficult journey,
Realize that you will not be alone.
I will be with you.
I will be the trees on the roadside
That you stop to lean on
When the road becomes
Too long,
Too dark,
Too scary,
Too painful.
I know —
Deep in my heart —
You will be able to complete your journey.
I have faith in you!
Your ever loving and supportive friend.
